Wednesday are said to be lining up a loan move for out-of-favour striker Leon Clarke to release funds to strengthen at the back.

The striker has long been linked with a move away from S6 after failing to win over the fans and management alike at Hillsborough following his arrival from Wolves.

And now Owls boss Brian Laws is set to give the green light for Clarke to make the move from Wednesday to pave the way for a new defender to come in to the club on loan.

Clarke was all set for a move to Southend United last season after impressing at Roots Hall while on loan in League One, a spell which saw him bag seven goals, but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour.

He returned to S6 to play a part in the Owls’ survival in the Championship towards the end of last season, bagging two crucial goals against Leicester City and Norwich respectively, but has since failed to nail down a starting spot.

And with the return of Francis Jeffers almost complete, and Akpo Sodje still to return to the fold, Clarke could well be deemed surplus to requirements at Hillsborough.
