Sheffield Wednesday Ladies took a break from league action but bowed out of the Tesco Women’s Premier League Cup with a 5-0 thumping at home to Everton.

Premier League Everton, who included a number of England international stars, were in control throughout the match at Worksop Town and deservedly progressed to the next round.

Gwen Harris opened the scoring just two minutes into the game to set the early tone for the match.

But, although Everton enjoyed long spells of possession, they failed to add to their tally before the interval, with the Wednesday defence more than holding their own.

The second half started with a fast pace, with both teams enjoying possession, but it was Tash Dowie who found the back of the net to double Everton’s lead and give them control of the tie.

Jody Handley bagged the visitors third as Wednesday looked for a way back into the clash, and Dowie went on to add two more goals to complete her hat-trick.

Owls chairman Jeff Maslin said: ‘I was absolutely delighted with todays performance and I think each member of our squad showed they had the right to be on the same pitch as theses internationals.

‘I would also like to thank all the Everton players and staff for their professionalism after the game when approached for autographs by a horde of young supporters. It was an absolute pleasure in hosting them and we wish them well with their european and league campaigns. They are a credit to the Womens game.’
