Wednesday are hopeful of retaining the loan services of young Everton midfielder Ross Barkley beyond Friday’s Yorkshire derby clash against Leeds United.

Reports suggest the 18-year-old’s loan deal, which is on a Football League youth loan rather than a senior one, will expire after Friday’s Championship clash with Neil Warnock’s side.

Barkley arrived at Hillsborough last month and has played in six matches for Wednesday but has yet to taste victory in the blue and white stripes.

Owls boss Dave Jones is still keen to retain the youngster, however, telling the Sheffield Star: ‘Hopefully we can keep Ross. I think they [Everton] want us to have him because the kid hasn’t done anything wrong.

‘Ross is a kid and going to make mistakes, but he’s some player when he drives on and plays the way he does.’

Barkley has been rated by some at Everton as the best youth product from the club since Wayne Rooney and Toffees boss David Moyes is eager for him to get more first-team action away from Goodison Park.
