The Sun (print edition, 4th July, p51) has reported that the Owls are showing a keen interest in Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton.

The 32-year-old could become available by the Birmingham club, as they have two other right-backs in ex-Blade, Ritchie De Laet, and ex-
Tyke, James Bree. However, Villa are apparently wanting a fee for the Scotland international.

Hutton’s contract has recently been renewed, and his due to expire next year. Regardless of that, Xia, the Villa owner, is reluctant to negotiate with promotion rivals such as the Owls. This was seen last year where Wednesday were keen to keep Joe Bennett after a loan, but he was later sold to Cardiff.

Hutton would join the Scottish contingent at Hillsborough, and would become the most capped player in the squad, with 50 Scotland caps. He also has Premier League experience, having spent the bulk of his career playing for Spurs, and for Villa.

However, the it is unknown to Owls fans if there is a true need for Hutton, as he may be perceived to be ‘past-it’ at 32-year old, but also because the Owls have adequate strength-in-depth in this position, with Jack Hunt and Liam Palmer.

This was certainly reflected in our Twitter poll:
