Wednesday boss Alan Irvine is set to complete the signing of former Reading defender Sam Sodje as soon as the transfer embargo slapped on the Owls is lifted.

Sodje, who has been playing in Greece following a stint with Leeds United last season, has been training with Wednesday this week and is all-set to become an Owl.

The Owls can’t complete the deal until the current transfer embargo on the club is lifted, but it’s expected to be sooner rather than later with an investment consortium pledging to put an imminent £2m into the club to pay off an unpaid tax bill of £600,000.

Irvine has been keen to bolster his defensive options with Mark Beevers sidelined for around two months with an ankle injury.

Captain Darren Purse is also just one yellow card away from receiving a suspension – leaving options at the back thin.

Sodje, 31, has experience at League One level having helped Leeds United to promotion last season.

He left Charlton Athletic at the end of last season and had a one-month spell in Greek football before returning for a trial with Championship side Portsmouth.
