Sheffield Wednesday’s youth team are safely through to the second round of the F.A Youth Cup after winning 3-2 at Rotherham United.

The first half had few chances of note for either side, but Jack Poulton twice tried his luck from range.

Everything good that Wednesday did came through captain, Cecil Nyoni, who was bossing the midfield.

But Wednesday took the lead in route one style. A long ball was latched upon by Mitch Husbands, who lobbed the goalkeeper from 20 yards.

Wednesday had been marginally the better side, but the Millers struck back through Conor Hiley and then grabbed what looked to be a late clincher courtesy of Joe Gaughan.

The Owls, though, to their credit kept coming forward and levelled the game with the last kick of normal time. Joel Magill capitalised on a defensve mix-up and buried the chance.

Into extra time, and the Millers were down to nine men with to injuries sustained.

Nevertheless, it took Wednesday all of the 30 minutes to seal their passage into the next round, just as penalties were looming.

Paddy Lacey showed excellent footwork in the box and drilled his shot beyond Rotherham ‘keeper, Danny Hancock.

The midfielder then ran 50 yards to celebrate with an empty stand!
