Owls boss Brian Laws and midfielder Glenn Whelan have been shortlisted for the Coca-Cola manager of the month and Powerade player of the month awards respectively after a superb December which saw the Owls move to within three points of the Championship play-offs.

Laws led Wednesday to four victories, a draw and a defeat in tough December fixture period while young midfielder Glenn Whelan was also recognised as being a vital part of the Wednesday team by the Football League.

Wednesday swept aside Leicester City 4-1 at the Walkers Stadium at the start of the month before also disposing of Norwich City, Stoke City and Barnsley on their travels.

The Owls’ home form wasn’t as impressive as on their travels, but a 3-0 defeat at home to league leaders Birmingham City deserved much more while Mark Crossley netted a remarkable leveller in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Southampton on the Saturday before Christmas.

Laws will be up against Birmingham City’s Steve Bruce, Colchester United’s Geraint Williams and West Bromwich Albion’s Tony Mowbray while Gary McSheffrey (Birmingham), Jason Koumas (WBA) and Richard Garcia (Colchester) are battling alongside Whelan for the players gong.

The manager of the month award will be announced at 12.30pm on Thursday, January 4 on Sky Sports News while the player of month gong will be announced at midday on Sunday, January 7 on Sky Sports 1.
