Owls boss Paul Sturrock is one of a number of Championship bosses chasing the services of Barnsley midfielder Stephen McPhail, Should the Reds fail to achieve promotion to the Championship.

Sturrock is wanting to add at least five new players to boost his squad ahead of the 2006/2007 season, and McPhail is high on his shortlist should Barnsley fail to win promotion through the play-offs.

Championship rivals Cardiff City are also said to be interested in the former Leeds United players signature. Current Bluebirds director Peter Ridssdale was at Elland Road when McPhail’s career first took off, and he then took him to Oakwell.

The former Republic of Ireland international made 52 appearances for Leeds in the Premiership, scoring three goals. He spent loan spells at Millwall and Nottingham Forest respectively before moving to Oakwell on a free transfer in 2004.

McPhail will be looking for a move away from the Owls neighbours should they fail to secure promotion to the Championship this season. They currently trail Huddersfield Town 1-0 with the second leg of the play-off semi-final ot be played on Monday evening.
