Wednesday fan and transfer target Gary Cahill has opted for a move to the red and white half of Sheffield by joining the Blades on a three-month loan deal today.

The Sheffield-born defender, who used to stand on the Hillsborough terraces as a youngster, has opted for a move to Bramall Lane in search of regular first team football which he wasn’t getting at Villa.

Cahill had been allowed to leave Villa Park by boss Martin O’Neill and Owls boss Brian Laws was reportedly showing interest as he looks to bolster his squad following a disastrous start to the season.

But the youngster will now link up with former Villa team-mate Lee Hendrie at Bramall Lane and try to help the Blades return to the Premiership at the first time of asking.

Villa boss O’Neill told the official Villa website: ‘There has been a lot of interest in Gary but I had to balance his need for football with the needs of the club. But I am always keen for players to get action wherever possible.’

Cahill broke on to the scene with the Birmingham club last season and made a name for himself with the Villa faithful.

But he’ll now be returning to his home city to impress Blades boss Bryan Robson and Villa gaffer O’Neill alike as he looks to continue progressing his career across the city.

We understand, Gary…
