Sam Winnall is one of many players who’s struggled for playing time at Sheffield Wednesday this season and may be on his way out when his deal expires in July. The 29-year-old has been short of form and playing time, so this may be his final campaign at Hillsborough.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

End the season now

Delay for weeks/months

Jonty Colman and Dom Howson of Examiner Live said in a Q&A: “There has to be a huge clear out this summer. I can’t see many of the out-of-contract players being retained. Sam Winnall… has been frozen out.”

Winnall joined Wednesday from Barnsley in 2017 and has gone on to make 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating eight goals. He’s netted only two goals this season, however, and hasn’t featured under Garry Monk since January, likely because he’s been below par in the Championship.

As per WhoScored, Winnall has racked up only 503 minutes of Championship football, created two chances, completed 61.1% of his 113 passes, won 18 aerial duels (29%), made one successful dribble (50%), had six shots on target (33%), made six clearances, given away 14 fouls and made five tackles.

The 29-year-old finds himself behind Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Connor Wickham and Atdhe Nuhiu in the pecking order under Monk and may not feature again for Wednesday before his contract expires.

As per Transfermarkt, Winnall impressed at Scunthorpe United (49 appearances, 23 goals, five assists), Barnsley (115 appearances, 48 goals, 12 assists) and on loan at Derby County (18 appearances, six goals, two assists), but he’s been unable to replicate such form for the Owls.

He’s unlikely to be missed if released over the summer.
