Opinion: Transfer blow as Sheffield Wednesday miss out on 22-year-old

|

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a transfer blow in their pursuit of Josh Sims, with the 22-year-old re-joining New York Red Bulls on loan until the end of the season. Garry Monk has been looking to strengthen his attacking options this month but has missed out on a number of targets – Rhian Brewster, Eddie Nketiah and now Sims.

Where should Sheffield Wednesday strengthen in the transfer market?

Wednesday have Jacob Murphy, Kadeem Harris and Adam Reach to call upon, but the trio haven’t contributed a lot of goals – Murphy has scored three goals in 21 Championship outings, Reach has made only three assists since October 2019 while Harris hasn’t scored since November and has made only one assist in three months.

In addition to having wingers who barely assist, the Owls have scored one or less goals in four of their last five games, so a new face out wide would be welcomed. Sims may not have been the ideal signing, however, as he’s only created three goals in 27 games for Southampton and two goals in eight games in his first loan stint at Red Bull.

Wednesday will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
