Sam Winnall could have an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday as he’s struggled for consistent playing time under Garry Monk while struggling for form when called upon.

The 28-year-old finds himself behind Steven Fletcher, Jordan Rhodes and Atdhe Nuhiu in the pecking order and may be deemed surplus to requirements after scoring just one league goal in the last two years.

Winnall’s contract is up in the summer and he’s unlikely to get a new deal, so a departure is on the cards at the end of the season. Wednesday could even look to offload the striker in January if a club makes an approach.

Paul Fraser of the Northern Echo reported on Thursday that Sunderland were interested in Winnall and could make a move, so the Owls may have an opportunity to cash in on an out-of-favour player.

The 28-year-old joined Wednesday from Barnsley in January 2017 and has gone on to make 38 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating six goals.

Despite an underwhelming stint at Hillsborough, Sunderland feel Winnall could be an asset to their squad. The Northern Echo say the Black Cats have had their eye on the striker for some time, but Phil Parkinson will need the financial backing from owner Stewart Donald before talks can proceed.
