Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday should loan out 19 y/o next season

|

Osaze Urhoghide has an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday after struggling for form and playing time in his first season at senior level. The 19-year-old made four first-team appearances under Garry Monk and quickly found himself surplus to requirements due to poor performances.

Liam Palmer and Moses Odubajo are ahead of Urhoghide in the pecking order, so the young right-back might need to seek a loan move away next season to get regular opportunities. He’s been unconvincing when called upon in the Championship and may benefit from dropping down a division as a result.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

As per Transfermarkt, Urhoghide made his debut in Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion (January 4) and came away with praise for his performance. He then played 85 minutes in the Owls’ 2-0 win over Leeds United (January 11) and staked a claim to be a regular at right-back. But after being hooked at half-time of Wednesday’s 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18), things fell apart for Urhoghide.

He was left on the bench in the Owls’ 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic (January 28), 0-0 draw with Millwall (February 1), 1-1 draw with Barnsley (February 8) and 1-0 defeat to Luton Town before returning against Reading (February 15). Unfortunately, he underperformed and was sent off after 49 minutes as Wednesday lost 3-0.

Monk has Palmer and Odubaju contracted until 2021, so opportunities may be hard to come by for Urhoghide.
