Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday should consider move for 29 y/o to replace Joey Pelupessy

|

Joey Pelupessy could be on his way out of Sheffield Wednesday this summer as his contract is up in the coming months and he’s unlikely to be handed a new deal after struggling for form and playing time under Garry Monk.

As per Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old spent the majority of the season as an unused substitute and was often criticised by supporters when he did feature, so Wednesday would be better off replacing him.

Garry Monk and his recruitment team will have to be thrifty in the transfer market, however, as the Owls can only afford loan signings and free agents. One experienced midfielder who could fit the criteria is Jack Rodwell, but a move for the 29-year-old doesn’t come without its problems.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Rodwell is currently at fierce rivals Sheffield United, but his contract at Brammall Lane is up this summer. He joined on a free transfer in January and has made only one appearance in all competitions for the Blades, so an exit looks on the cards.

The England international isn’t Premier League level, but he’s proven himself a good Championship player recently – Rodwell impressed at Blackburn Rovers in 2018/19, making 22 appearances. He’d certainly be an improvement on Pelupessy, but whether he’s willing to drop a division remains to be seen.

The problem is that Rodwell isn’t short of confidence despite his career spiralling in recent years. The midfielder revealed to the Guardian in January that he turned down a number of clubs and opted against renewing his deal at Blackburn before joining United.

He said: “I feel like I’ve got more to offer at this level for sure. I’m still capable of playing at the highest level. That remains my ambition. I’m very ambitious and nothing has changed there. I’ve got to be patient and show the right attitude, but I will be ready whenever I’m called upon.”

Rodwell isn’t getting the opportunities on the pitch, however, and could be a regular at most Championship clubs instead. He’s likely to be a free agent soon, so Wednesday should consider a move.
