Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday exit couldn’t have gone worse for 23 y/o striker

|

Franck Betra was once a hot prospect at Sheffield Wednesday after rising through the youth ranks and earning a professional deal, but the 23-year-old’s career spiralled due to injury problems and he ended up being released in 2017. Betra’s exit couldn’t have gone worse, however, as he’s bounced around from different clubs and isn’t getting regular playing time.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The French striker progressed from Wednesday’s academy to the fringes of the first-team, but he never made an appearance at senior level. Betra suffered long-term injuries and ended up not being retained at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

He joined PAS Giannina on a free transfer and made 15 appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal and making only two assists. The 23-year-old lasted only a season at the Zosimades Stadium, however, and ended up joining KF Trepca 89 in August 2018.

After making a paltry eight appearances and scoring two goals, Betra left the club in the summer of 2019. He was in the wilderness for a number of months before joining Académie Football Bobigny in February 2020. The centre-forward failed to make an appearance before the season was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, so it’s been a wasted campaign.

Betra has led a nomadic career since his 2017-move from Wednesday and only has three goals to his name from 23 appearances. According to Foot National and Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old is only contracted at the Auguste Delaune until the end of the current season, so he may be looking for a fifth club in three years this summer.
