Sheffield Wednesday are likely to be on the hunt for a new defender to accompany Tom Lees, Julian Borner and Dominic Iorfa next season.

David Bates and Sam Hutchinson have provided cover at centre-back but won’t be at Hillsborough next season – Bates’ failed loan move from Hamburg is coming to an end while Hutchinson’s contract will expire in June.

Tom Lees hasn’t set the place alight either, so some healthy competition wouldn’t go amiss. With Wednesday forced to shop in the bargain bucket this summer, signing a player like Lewis Gibson on loan makes perfect sense.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The 19-year-old impressed during a short stint at Fleetwood Town early this season and will be loaned out by Everton to a higher-up side in 2020/21 – the Championship would be an improvement on League One.

Gibson joined the Toffees from Newcastle United in 2017 and has gone on to make 38 appearances for the U23s. He’s yet to make a first-team appearance for Everton and is unlikely to dethrone Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate next season, so a loan move away would suit all parties.

With Gibson getting rave reviews from Fleetwood manager Joey Barton, Wednesday should be confident of the England U20 international having a positive impact at Hillsborough.
