Opinion: Sheff Wed should consider move for 28 y/o Aston Villa man to strengthen attack

|

There could be an exodus of strikers at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall, Fraser Preston, Fernando Forestieri, Jack Stobbs and Atdhe Nuhiu out of contract in the coming months.

Garry Monk could be left with only Jordan Rhodes in the first-team next season, so the Owls need to strengthen their attack in the transfer market. With no budget for new recruits, Wednesday will have to resort to signing players on loan and free transfers.

One player who should be on their radar is Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan. He’s spent the second half of the season on loan at Birmingham City and would be a brilliant acquisition for Wednesday given his fine form in 2020.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Hogan joined Villa in January 2017 and has gone on to make 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and making four assists. As per Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old fell down the pecking order in 2018/19 and was loaned out to Sheffield United (January 31, 2019 – May 31, 2019).

Hogan struggled for playing time this season before joining Birmingham (January 29, 2020 – present) and has found his scoring boots again. The Republic of Ireland international has seven goals and one assist in nine appearances – as many as Winnall (1), Preston (0), Forestieri (2), Stobbs (0), Rhodes (3) and Nuhiu (3) collectively.

With Hogan being out of favour at Villa and proving his worth in the Championship, Wednesday should make a loan move this summer.
