Opinion: Sheff Wed should consider move for 23 y/o Bournemouth man when David Bates leaves

|

Sheffield Wednesday could look to bring in a centre-back when David Bates’ disappointing loan spell comes to an end. The Owls’ lack of a transfer budget will mean they’ll have to shop for loan players and free transfers this summer, so Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson should be on their radar when Bates leaves.

The 23-year-old has struggled for first-team football this season and was linked with a loan move to the Championship in January, so Wednesday have a good chance of bringing Stephens to Hillsborough.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Since rising through the youth ranks to the Bournemouth first-team in 2018, Simpson has gone on to make 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and making one assist.

This season, he’s fallen behind Nathan Ake, Steve Cook and Chris Mepham in the pecking order, so a temporary move away next season may suit all parties – Wednesday strengthen their squad while Bournemouth keep Simpson happy with competitive football.

In January, Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Derby County enquired about loaning the centre-back but were rebuffed by the Cherries. Bournemouth may not stand in Stephens’ way this time, however, so Wednesday should try to capitalise on the situation.
