Opinion: Sheff Wed defender may have uncertain future, fallen out of favour under Garry Monk

|

Osaze Urhoghide is expected to sit on the bench ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Luton on Wednesday night after falling out of favour under Garry Monk. Urhoghide has been an unused substitute in the Owls’ last four games and could be pushed out of the matchday squad when Moses Odubajo returns.

The 19-year-old made his debut in Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion (January 4) and was rewarded for his impressive performance with 85 minutes in their 2-0 win over Leeds United (January 11). But after being hooked at half-time of Wednesday’s 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18), Urhoghide hasn’t featured since.

He was left on the bench in their 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic (January 28), 0-0 draw with Millwall (February 1) and 1-1 draw with Barnsley (February 8), so it’s hard to see him returning against Luton. Wednesday’s U-turn on Odubajo has now placed uncertainty over Urhoghide’s role in the first-team.

If Dominic Iorfa, Liam Palmer and Odubajo are preferred at right-back, the 19-year-old could spend the rest of the season on the periphery.
