Opinion: Garry Monk should move for 27 y/o Stoke City man if Bristol City don’t sign him

|

Sheffield Wednesday could lose five strikers this summer, as Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri and Fraser Preston are out of contract in the coming months.

Garry Monk may be forced to shop for loan players and free transfers, as the Owls don’t have a budget for new additions, so Benik Afobe could be a good option if he doesn’t turn his existing loan move permanent.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The 27-year-old has spent 15 months at Stoke City, having joined the Potters from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Afobe has gone on to make 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and making two assists, but he’s been out of favour at the Britannia Stadium this campaign.

Stoke loaned him out to Bristol City in August and he scored three goals in five games before suffering a season-ending knee injury in September that forced him to undergo surgery. Afobe returned to the grass in February, however, so Wednesday wouldn’t need to worry about his fitness.

As per Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old has 43 goals and 12 assists in 103 Championship starts with seven different clubs. He’s a tried and tested striker in the second-tier of English football and was prolific at Bristol City before his injury.

If the Robins don’t trigger his buying option, Wednesday should make an ambitious loan approach this summer.
