Matt Penney has an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday as his contract expires this summer. The 22-year-old hasn’t made an appearance for the Owls since November 2018 and has spent this season on loan at FC St Pauli.

But despite the possibility of being a free agent in July, all is not lost for Penney. Garry Monk was pleased with his application during his winter break back in Sheffield and says he wants to see Penney over the summer before deciding whether to keep him.

Monk told the Sheffield Star: “(Penney) was probably only in training for three or four days before we had to give a decision on whether he goes back or not, so that wasn’t long enough to really see him. I’ve seen Matt before, but four days isn’t enough to judge whether he can help right here and right now.

“He’s someone that come the summer, we want to have a good look and give him the opportunity to show what he can do. It could be potentially a good fit. The age is good, the mentality is good, the profile for him is really, really good.”

Penney rose through the youth ranks to the Wednesday first-team in 2016 and has gone on to make 17 appearances in all competitions. The left-back fell out of favour during the second half of last season, however, and was loaned out for the final year of his contract.

He’s made 13 appearances for St Pauli and is a regular under Jos Luhukay when fit. Monk is keeping the door open for Penney, so he’s clearly made enough of an impression in his brief amount of time back in the country. It remains to be seen if Penney can take the opportunity with both hands, however.
