Tom Lees could have an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday after struggling for form this season. The 29-year-old has been a regular under Garry Monk, skippering the side for most of the campaign, but he’s been guilty of making errors leading to goals and looked short on confidence before the season was postponed due to Covid-19.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

End the season now

Delay for weeks/months

As per WhoScored, Lees has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season. He’s racked up 1873 minutes of Championship football, contributed three goals, completed 67.6% of his 827 passes, won 136 aerial duels (67%), blocked 23 shots/passes/crosses, made 113 clearances, given away 16 fouls and made a tackle (25) or interception (24) every 38 minutes.

The 29-year-old has been at the heart of Wednesday’s defence that has conceded 24 goals in 12 Championship games since the turn of the year – only Hull City (29) have a worse record. The Owls have shipped three or more goals in four of their last five in the league, so Lees may be walking the tightrope when Monk writes a list of expendable players to leave this summer.

Lees joined Wednesday from Leeds United in 2014 and has gone on to make 231 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and assisting seven. He has one more year on his £25k-per-week/£1.3m-a-year contract but could be replaced over the summer.

Wednesday are in financial difficulty after overspending on players in recent years and will save £1.3m in wages if Lees is moved on. The 29-year-old is one of the highest earners in the squad but isn’t worth keeping if his form has been disastrous.
