Opinion: 4 players Sheff Wed could sell following Dejphon Chansiri’s admission

|

Dejphon Chansiri’s financial mismanagement has forced Sheffield Wednesday to change up their transfer policy from a buying club into a selling club.

As per Transfermarkt, the Owls spent nearly £10m on new recruits in 2016/17 and more than £13m in 2017/18, but things have changed in the last 18 months. Four of Wednesday’s five signings in 2018/19 were on loan and the club spent less than £1m on 11 signings this season.

The club narrowly avoided sanctions for breaching FFP regulations and now need to get their finances back in the black. Chansiri recently spoke to Yorkshire Live and admitted he could sell players to balance the books, but who is expendable and valuable enough for Wednesday to cash in on?

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Keiren Westwood has one year remaining on his deal at Hillsborough and doesn’t look to have a future under Garry Monk after being frozen out in November. His market value is only £275k but Wednesday would be cutting his £1.56m-a-year/£30k-per-week salary from the wage bill – saving £1.84m through his sale.

Tom Lees has one year left on his contract and could be offloaded this summer after struggling for consistency. The 29-year-old’s market value is £3.15m, but it’s hard to see any suitor paying that price given his current stock. Lees earns £1.3m-a-year/£25k-per-week at Wednesday, so the club could make a considerable bit of money from his sale.

Adam Reach’s deal expires in 2021, but his future could be uncertain due to inconsistent performances and with how much money could be made through his sale – the 27-year-old’s market value is £4.05m and his salary is £1.04m-a-year/£20k-per-week. So with Matt Penney potentially an option to replace Reach next season, Wednesday have an opportunity to make £5m.

Jordan Rhodes is out of contract in over 12 months and has been surplus to requirements for some time. The 30-year-old has amassed less than 500 minutes of Championship football this season and is likely to be sold this summer. Rhodes’ market value is £1.80m, but he’s earning £2.08m-a-year/£40k-per-week at Wednesday, so the club could make around £4m through his sale.

If Wednesday sold every player at their current market value this summer, they would make £9.28m and save £6m in wages.
