Opinion: 3 left-backs who could leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer

|

There could be an exodus of left-backs at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, as the Owls have one out-of-contract first-teamer, one out-of-contract U23 player and one out-of-contract & out-of-favour defender returning from loan.

Garry Monk is said to be in contract talks with one player and wants to take a closer look at another, but let’s see which three left-backs are at risk of leaving Wednesday in the coming months.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Joe West is out of contract this summer and could be on his way out of Wednesday as he’s failed to make a first-team appearance since signing a professional contract in 2018.

The 19-year-old has already been told that he’s surplus to requirements, so it’s hard to see him getting a new deal in the coming months.

Matt Penney is another player whose contract is up this summer. The 22-year-old has an uncertain future as his last Wednesday appearance came in and there hasn’t been talks over a new deal.

A lot of fans want to see Penney stay next season and Garry Monk has been open about a desire to see the left-back train over the summer, but it remains to be seen what Wednesday do. As things stand, he’ll soon be a free agent.

Morgan Fox’s contract is up in the coming months, but Wednesday are trying to tie him down to a new deal. The Owls aren’t making much progress, however, so there’s a fear he could leave on a free transfer this summer.

The 26-year-old has been linked with Huddersfield Town, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough, so Fox may have conflicted feelings about staying. It’s been four months since he was handed a new deal and no progress has been made, so where will Fox end up?
