Sheffield Wednesday took a much-needed victory against Sunderland on Thursday evening in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Making the trip up to the Stadium of Light for the game, the Owls secured a 2-0 victory with goals coming from Marco Matias and Adam Reach and the Cup draw now sees us face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the second round of the competition – but we can concern ourselves with Nuno Espirito Santo’s boys later in the month.
For now, we take the positives from this one and hope it translates into better form in the Championship as we look to get our league campaign properly up and running after the difficult summer we endured.
Barry Bannan once again stood out in the game with his own performance and that was highlighted by fans on social media as they reacted to the result.
Yesterday’s observations #swfc
-Palmer was solid for a change
– Fletcher just doesn’t seem sharp enough
– Great to see some young tallent coming through
-Neilson is a mountain
– Atmosphere was crap again
-We are a league one club without Fesi and Bannan— Mark (@baowl) August 17, 2018

Barry Bannan is one of the best players I've seen in the blue and white in my life. There's certainly nobody better since 2000. #swfc

The Scot certainly deserved his Man of the Match award but if we do have one small comfort this year, the likelihood of a loan departure is minimal and we survived the permanent transfer window with him still in our shirt, so let’s hope the season begins to match everyone’s hopes irrespective of what’s going on off the pitch.
