The football’s back – but not as we know it. The Capital One Cup kicks-off the new campaign for Wednesday, with a trip to Oldham Athletic in the first round tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

Eyes may be on Saturday’s Championship opener at Derby County, but Owls boss Dave Jones will be keen for his men to get their competitive campaign off to a winning start against the lower-division Latics.

Jones told the official SWFC website: ‘We’re ready for this game – we’ve been ready for the past seven days. We will be favourites but we will have to work hard to win this game.’

The Owls boss is set to give competitive debuts to a number of players. Only midfielder Chris Lines is definitely out with a groin injury, and Jones is expected to field a strong side for the clash with Athletic.

Former Latic Kieran Lee could feature at right-back. Lee made the switch from Boundary Park over the summer and will be keen to start for his new club against his former employers.

The Owls eased to a 3-0 victory when the sides met in League One in April en route to promotion, and Wednesdayites will be hoping it proves just as comfortable tonight.
