Official: Sheffield Wednesday confirm defender departure

|

Sheffield Wednesday confirm Jordan Thorniley has joined Blackpool on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old has been short of playing time under Garry Monk this season and opted to drop down a division to get first-team football.

Thorniley has made 35 appearances in all competitions since joining the Owls from Everton in 2016, but he’s been on the periphery in the last 11 months. The centre-back’s last league appearance came in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Rotherham United (February 16).

He’s been an unused substitute and left out of the matchday squad due to Morgan Fox, Moses Odubajo and Liam Palmer being ahead in the fullback pecking order. Tom Lees, Dominic Iorfa and Julian Borner are ahead at centre-back.

Could Sheffield Wednesday lose Dominic Iorfa in January?

Yes

No

Thorniley made two appearances for Wednesday this season, both of which came in the EFL Cup. He played a full 90 minutes in the Owls’ 1-0 win over Rotherham United (August 28) and 2-0 defeat to Everton (September 24), but didn’t do enough to make the first-team squad on a regular basis.

The 23-year-old made the bench in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic (October 5), 0-0 draw with Leeds United (October 26) and 2-2 draw with Swansea City (November 9), but hasn’t managed to come on.
