Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Steven Fletcher will be ‘available’ to face Nottingham Forest over the weekend after ‘shrugging off a minor injury’ from last week. The 33-year-old has been training regularly in the days leading up to Saturday’s meeting at Hillsborough and looks likely to start.

Fletcher picked up a training ground injury last week and was doubtful of playing against Forest, but his swift recovery is great news for Garry Monk. The Scottish international has scored more goals in the Championship (13) than Atdhe Nuhiu (3), Jordan Rhodes (3), Fernando Forestieri (2), Sam Winnall (1), and Connor Wickham (0) this season, so Monk can’t be without him.

Fletcher’s contract being up at the end of June means the Forest clash might be his penultimate outing in a Wednesday shirt, however. The Owls’ meeting with Bristol City on June 28 could be his last. Monk has opened talks with the prolific striker over a new deal but little progress has been made.

Wednesday have until June 23 to confirm a contract extension or Fletcher’s release, but it’s up in the air what the outcome will be.

He could still make a telling contribution before he does leave, however, as the Owls could cut their eight-point deficit to the playoffs if they beat fifth-placed Forest and seventh-placed City this month.
