Wednesday could well be poised to make their first signing of the pre-season if newspaper reports are to be believed, with Burnley’s out-of-contract James O’Connor linked.

The midfielder failed to agree a deal to stay at Turf Moor after the end of last season after being offered a new deal by Clarets boss Owen Coyle last term, and has been seeking pastures new.

In total, he made 149 appearances in his time at Turf Moor, scoring 11 goals during his three-year spell at the club, after previous stints at West Brom and Stoke City.

And Owls boss Brian Laws is all set to swoop for the Dubliner, with strengthening the Wednesday midfield a real priority for the gaffer.

Burnely boss Coyle told the official BFC website: ‘James said that he would think over the offer we made him and after speaking to him again on Thursday he felt that he wanted the opportunity to see what was out there.

‘And at that point, given that he couldn’t commit to the club, we have parted ways.

‘James worked hard for us and did well and he was a great lad to work with, but I need people to commit, so he leaves with our best wishes.

‘I wish him ever success, except of course when he plays against us!’
