Wednesday may have their Championship fate back in their own hands following their weekend victory, but a late goal from former Owl Chris Brunt may have just given the Owls a boost.

Wednesday leapfrogged both Leicester City and Southampton following the weekend defeat of the Foxes at the Walkers Stadium, but could have slumped behind the Saints had they picked up a shock victory against promotion-hopefuls West Brom last night.

And they almost did, until former Owl Chris Brunt came off the bench for the Baggies to level late on and all-but seal West Brom’s promotion to the Premiership, and leave the Saints needing a win against Sheffield United on Sunday to stand any chance of survival.

Saints boss Nigel Pearson told BBC Sport: ‘We are disappointed not to have won after going in front but the point gives us more of a fighting chance than if we had lost.

‘It drags other teams back into the equation and applies pressure on them. If we perform like that on Sunday we have a great chance of winning our last game and hopefully staying up.’

The result means Southampton now have to win on the final day against Sheffield United to stand any chance of staying up, with Wednesday also failing to win, with the Owls’ goal difference 14 better than that of Pearson’s charges.
