Monk Identifies Wednesday’s Weakness As Everton Take The Win – “Clinical”

|

With an unbeaten start to life at Hillsborough for new manager Garry Monk, Tuesday evening’s fixture saw us face Premier League side Everton in the third round of the EFL Cup.

It was a tough affair as most expected and despite mixed Premier League form for manager Marco Silva’s side, they started very brightly and had established a 2-0 advantage inside of the opening ten minutes as Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a brace.

Second half, the visitors continued to dominate the ball but we were slightly more productive in front of the net, however, we couldn’t find the breakthrough to turn it into a one goal game and see the pressure rise on them.

2-0 was how it finished and we couldn’t cause an upset.

Speaking to the BBC following the 90 minutes, Monk said of our efforts on the evening.

“You are always disappointed not to get the result but there were some very positive things for us tonight. The difference was taking the chances. I thought we competed really well and if we could have been more clinical it may have been a different story. There were lots of good things and some of those lads haven’t had a lot of minutes – I wanted to have a look at some of them for the first time and I thought we competed so well.”
