Owls favourite Jon-Paul McGovern has been linked with a summer move to League Two side Boston United after being told he can leave the club.

The 25-year old was told by Owls boss Paul Sturrock he can leave the club when his contract expires on June 30th – to the shock of the majority of the Hillsborough faithful.

A spokesperson for Wednesday told the Sheffield Star: ‘As far as Sheffield Wednesday are aware, no-one has yet made a move to sign Jon Paul McGovern. Although he does not feature in our plans for next season any club that wishes to sign him before the expiration of his contract on June 30th would have to do so through us.’

He continued: ‘He becomes a free agent on July 1 and as of then he can sign for any club he wishes – but until then the paperwork must be approved by Sheffield Wednesday.’

The former Celtic and Sheffield United winger was an ever-present during his first season at the club – helping the Owls to promotion via the play-offs from League One in 2005.

But the Scot was told he could leave the club this summer after an injury-hit season in the Championship which saw him feature just eight times for the club.

The move would be a big step down for McGovern – who was voted player of the year by fans during the 2004/2005 season. He was linked with a move to Leeds United, and more recently Doncaster Rovers.
