Jon-Paul McGovern’s exit from Hillsborough this week has caused a bust-up between Owls boss Paul Sturrock and chairman Dave Allen according to reports.

The Owls called time on the former Celtic winger’s stay at Hillsborough this week by refusing to offer him a new deal at the club – despite winning the player of the season award in 2004/2005 and recovering from a long-term injury.

Sturrock told the Daily Mirror: ‘It is a killer for me because he has been a fantastic servant for the club. It must also be a real kick in the teeth for the lad because he has been a model professional.’

Sturrock admitted his board room meeting with Allen and his fellow directors become heated last week as they thrashed out McGovern’s future, but also stated that these meetings happen up and down the country on a daily basis.

The Owls chairman responded to the reports – which were also in the Yorkshire Post and Sheffield Star – by putting the reason for McGovern’s departure down to medical advice.

He told the official SWFC site: ‘The club could not offer Jon-Paul a contract due to the medical advice we received. There was no other reason for this decision.’
