Young Wednesday defender Rory McArdle is set to complete a permanent move to League Two side Rochdale within the next 48 hours, according to the official Rochdale site.

McArdle is currently in his second loan spell at Spotland after failing to get a chance in the first team at Hillsborough – and the Lancashire club have agreed a contract to keep him at the club until 2009.

The Northern Irish youngster made just one substitute appearance for Wednesday after coming through the youth ranks at Middlewood Road – before Paul Sturrock allowed him to go on loan at Dale in August 2005 where he made 16 starts for the club.

And McArdle returned to Spotland in November this year after failing to make an impression on the former Wednesday manager and has made eight starts for for Steve Parkin’s men.

The deal, which is likely to go through as an undisclosed fee, should go through before the end of the week and marks the first of the movers and shakers from S6 after the start of the January transfer window.
