Match Stats: Wigan Athletic v Sheffield Wednesday – Opening Day Defeat

In amongst talk of a transfer embargo for Financial Fair Play breaches, a failure to sign a single player so far this summer and a tasty meeting between the fans and the owners set for next week, some Sheffield Wednesday fans might have been forgiven for forgetting today marked the big kick-off in the Championship season of 2018/19.

The early optimism amongst some who felt we should still be challenging for at least the Play-Off spots this year given the players that remain in the group took a heavy knock as we found ourselves 3-1 down inside of the opening hour of the match as the hosts at the DW Stadium dominated where it mattered.

With Wigan opening the scoring, Atdhe Nuhiu did get us back on level terms in the 20th minute but that only lasted for six-minute as they regained the advantage and went on to take a 3-1 lead.

With just over 20 minutes remaining in the tie, Fernando Forestieri made it 3-2 but sadly for the travelling Owls fans that was where the scoring ended and Wednesday open the season with defeat.
