Wednesday look to have beaten off competition from a number of Championship clubs to secure the signature of Crewe Alexandre midfielder Kenny Lunt according to BBC Radio Sheffield.

Vital Sheffield Wednesday last week revealed the Owls were among a host of Championship clubs chasing the services of the highly-rated midfielder and it now looks like boss Paul Sturrock will unveil Lunt as his third summer signing.

The 26-year-old was attracting interest from Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Southampton and was given the all-clear to leave the Gresty Road club by manager Dario Gradi.

Gradi told the official Crewe Alexandre website: ‘He is training with us and as I have said before the longer he doesn’t sign for anyone then the better chance we have. If Glenn Hoddle is telling Kenny that he wants him to play in central midfield in his first team next season at Wolves, then I have to turn around to him and advise Kenny that that is the best move for his career.’

Lunt is one of the many players to come through the famous Crewe youth system that’s produced the likes of Robbie Savage, Dean Ashton and Danny Murphy. He’s made over 350 appearances for the Railwaymen during his time there.
