Former Wednesday and Preston North End stopper David Lucas has been taken on trial by Barnsley as he looks to return to Championship action following his release from Wednesday in the summer.

The 28-year-old failed to agree terms on a reduced contract to stay at Hillsborough following a knee injury in February which would have kept him out of action until Christmas.

Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie told the official Barnsley website: ‘David has come in and will train with us this week. Hopefully, if things go well, we may try to get him into next week’s reserve-team game.’

Lucas had remained in S6 after failing to agree terms on a new contract as he trained with the rest of the squad to help him return to full fitness and search for a new club.

He joined the Owls on a permanant basis in the summer of 2004, after two loan spells at th club, for a fee of £100,000 and made 52 appearances between the sticks for the club – including the League One Play-Off Final in his first full year at the club.
