Wednesday’s winless league run continued in emphatic fashion on Saturday as struggling Leyton Orient thrashed Alan Irvine’s men 4-0 at Brisbane Road to leave the Owls five points adrift of the top six.

It was even up until half-time before the hosts, who have a decent record at home this season despite their position just above the relegation zone, took Wednesday to the cleaners in the second half thanks to four goals without reply.

Ben Chorley fired the hosts ahed from the penalty spot after Gary Teale was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area, before Harry Kane, Alex Revell and Paul-Jose Mpoku sealed a big win for Orient.

It was Wednesday’s fourth league defeat on the spin in the league and sees them drop down to 12th position in the table.

Irvine made two changes to the side that drew with Charlton Athletic at Hillsborough lass time out.

New signing Gary Madine went straight into the starting eleven at the expense of Neil Mellor, who dropped to the bench, while Lewis Buxton returned from a hamstring injury to replace Darren Purse in defence.

Buxton played at right-back with Michael Morrison partnering Reda Johnson in the centre, and there was no place in the squad for Mark Reynolds, another new arrival at S6.

Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver was handed the captain’s armband following the departure of Purse, and it turned out to be a game the Wednesdayite will be keen to quickly forget.

Chances were few and far between in the first half as defences came out on top.

Chorley was first to test Weaver with a volley before Chris Sedgwick has the Owls’ first chance on goal – and he should have done better with his effort.

The midfielder made the most of some sloppy defending by the O’s in and around their penalty box, but Sedgwick saw his effort cleared off the line.

Wednesday were shading the game in terms of possession and chances but the hosts were the first to have the ball in the back of the net, although Revell’s effort was chalked off by the referee for offside.

At the other end, Gary Teale, one of Wednesday’s better performers, saw another good effort come and go in a game which never looked like being a one-sided affair in the first half.

Half-Time: Orient 0-0 Wednesday

Little was seen of Madine as an attacking threat, and the former Carlisle United man had to depart the action early at half-time through injury, as well as Buxton, with the duo being replaced by Neil Mellor and Mark Beevers respectively.

The visitors took their time to regroup in the second half and Orient came flying out of the traps.

Dean Cox had an early effort saved by Weaver before the hosts opened the scoring five minutes in.

Teale was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area, something he disagreed with, and Chorley stepped up to fire the ball by Weaver from the spot to open the scoring.

The goal gave Orient a huge confidence boost and saw Wednesday’s confident shattered.

It almost led to the hosts doubling their lead not long after through Revell, but Orient didn’t need to wait too long to find the back of the net again.

It came seven minutes after Chorley’s spot-kick success, and Revell was central again as his dangerous free-kick picked out Kane, who netted in his first senior start for the O’s.

Wednesday’s defence was all over the place and it was the cause of their downfall at Brisbane Road.

Orient threatened to make it embarrassing for Wednesday and they did just that, with Revell taking advantage of more sloppy defending by their visitors with 11 minutes to go when he headed home from another free-kick which the Owls failed to deal with.

It was 4-0 in the closing stages as Mpoku came off the bench to get his name on the scoresheet, in rather fortunate circumstances, when his free-kick bounced straight by Weaver and into the back of the net to complete a miserable day at the office for Alan Irvine and his men.

Full-Time: Orient 4-0 Wednesday

  • it was said by many that our drubbing against exeter was one of the worst in our history, now it has a contender……what a disgrace.

  • A club of our stature should not be losing heavily to Exeter and Leyton Oriend (no disrespect to either of those two teams!)

  • disgrace brand new defence same problems think irvine will walk either tomorrow or on tuesday night if we fail to win

  • Just had a text at 1920 from a good source that he’s been sacked, nothing official but hear press conference in morning you heard it first hear.

  • hmmm, they dont normally do press conferences for sacking, usually just give a statement to the press. Hope its true though.

  • Needs to be true we can only go one way with him in charge…….DOWN. Seems to me cannot lead nobody seems to wants to play for him. As many ppl say on hear one of or the best squad in the league, but no results shocking Nnew manager before he spends anymore

  • Did anyone go yesterday?? I did and oh my god. Poor Alan he hasn’t got a clue. Buxton should never of played due to first game in 2 months I appreciate other situations may have led to this but still poor management. Chris Sedgewick… He can go with Irvine he was totally useless first i’ve seen of him since he signed like an old man. Basically my conclusion yesterday was we need a whole new midfield no legs and to old. Plus points Reda Johnson with Micheal Morrison cenre half looked decent Gary Madine looks a class act in the making and Dezzy Dan Jones was good going forward in first half. We should of had two before HT. The subs did change the game but still no excuse losing 4 nil. Orient made us look stupid and players heads went down. Ckinton Morrisin needs to be dropped constant moaning must be frustrating playing with some of these clowns though. Heff and Madine up front against Yeovil. Potter needs a recall least he can run JOC trys but isn’t good enough so he’s out the door for me. JJ should not be on the Bench yes he’s frustrating but he’s our best attacking option going forward and he looks un interested thanks to Irvine and his Drone boring tactics. I think he knows his time is up when his own fans are singing you’re getting sacked in the morning. Milan take the managers job on there your signings any way. Please I hope Irvine has gone. Yesterday and some of the other results should not been allowed to happen.

  • May be Sheff Utd will sign Purse??? He didn’t play for them yesterday must be his influence. I would like to add that Reda Johnson was awful 2nd half yesterday but Beevers and him [2 left footed} CB didn’t work. Dreadful set pieces. Funny that. Irvine go.

  • I don’t think AI will be sacked….yet, many more results like yesterday though and he’ll be worried everytime his phone rings. A good win Tuesday followed up by getting through to the next round of the FA cup on Saturday will start to put things right.

  • Then we will lose another few games 1-0 then get stuffed at other smaller clubs and be where we are now or lower. I am sorry Sussex he’s got to go. I remember his appoinment thinking it wasn’t great and basically he has taken us down along with some very poor players.

  • we need to stop kidding ourselves that we have one of the best squads in the division. the centre of midfield has been non existent all last season and almost all this season, this puts pressure on the defence and dries up options going forward. how can that constitute the best squad in the division? we have missed coke but we need at least 2 more decent players in these positions

  • agree about the absent midfield. miller and coke are the obvious pairing to play but we truely do need somebody to compete with them, if not better than them. o’connor tries but brings very little and potter just bring nothing. its still a better squad than most in that league and should be doing better than 12th in the league, admittedly im unsure when it comes to irvine. we should ne playing the ball through the midfield not lumping it from the back all the time.

  • No central midfield, and why the ***** wasnt Heffernan given a chance after the charlton game. If AI has no plans on signing two central midfielders then we are *****ed for the rest of the season. If we dont sack him before end of jan then our season is over

  • Just a small point. Why would Nigel Pearson want to leave a job he has just made good? I think people sem to think that because of a our name we could attract the best of the best. It was only six weeks ago that we were the laughing stock. We have the right man at the helm in Manderic. Its his club, his money and he alone will decide what the next move is. While AI is in the job we should back him 100%. Mindless morons calling for the managers head whilst the team are playing is an absolute disgrace, same as the same mindless morons berating purse everytime he touched the ball. I am not happy with AI but wont be shouting for his head if we go behind tomorrow night. Would like him to give heffernan a chance and cant understand why he doesnt, but maybe there are things that we dont know. Up the owls

  • worst 45 mins i’ve seen in ages – the groan in the wednesday stand when they put 4 minutes injury time up said it all – irvin out – roland for manager…

  • I would love Roland to come in as manager but what about the likes of o’neil or alladyce? Shouldnt we be looking at that sort of calibre of manager now? Any how I think AI will be given one last chance. Any of the new signings cup tied?

  • Why does Irvine feel the need to compile these intense dossiers on all the teams we play. You would think we were playing Barcelona instead of Leyton Orient the way he was talking before the game.Let the opposition worry about us attacking them and not us worry about them hurting us.Get Heff in up front(what more has the bloke got to do to get a chance from start) and get JJ in for Sedgewick and lets really go at Yeovil on Tues from word go.

  • Agree with fed up owl. Who assembled the the so called best squad in the division with very little resources prior to our new found wealth after inheriting a load of ****e. And now we’ve got a few quid he’s brought in some highly rated players who could quite easily gone elsewhere. We’ve sorted the attack and defence, it’s pretty apparent the midfield needs sorting now. I know we all have high expectations and want to get straight out of this division and head for the premier league, but Maderic has only just arrived and a bit more patience is required. But not much more, and we all know Maderic wont have much more either.

  • Mindless morons booing! Fedup owl, why shouldn’t they boo when they travel athe length and breadth of England to watch them not get beaten get battered and watch a team not even put in a fight, agree if they get beaten and it’s a real good game, but 5-1 Exeter , 4-0 leyton come pal wake up! And before anyone asks I don’t go to away games! Maybe it’s more of a disgrace sitting there and not doing anything!

  • i went saturday, i booed at the final whistle, i also booed the fact that most the wednesday players went straight down the tunnel at final whistle – how much are they on? 2000 wednesdayites paying out to sit in some shed of a ground in east london where there is one ****e pub on the high street – not so much a day out as community service and they can’t even be bothered to applaud OUR efforts – well i ain’t gonna applaud THEIRS(not that there was much effort) – boo the lot of em they’re a discrace – if they lose tomorrow we’ll have lost more than we’ve won – somethings got to give…

  • Ime wide awake thanks. The fact is that when MM decides its time for a change then we will have one. Booing at the final whistle shows your dissatisfaction of what a terrible and from all accounts gutless performance. Thats acceptable. Booing the manager and calling for his head mid game, booing individual players mid game is not. I accept that 2300 Wednesday supporters paid alot of money (By choice may I add) so not really community service to see no effort. Done it many times myself, and even waited outside grounds to confront those responsible rather than just go home. All I am saying is give MM the credit he deserves and be sure in the knowledge that he will look after the other stuff. Up the Owls. BTW ‘mindless Morons’ was probably a bit harsh
