With Sheffield Wednesday’s form seeing a drastic improvement following the arrival of new manager Steve Bruce as Jos Luhukay’s replacement, we did of course loosely flirt with the Play-Off spots in the Championship in 2018/19.

Depending on how we rebuild the first team squad over the summer, there are those that are already hoping we can maybe try to go one better in 2019/20 but of course, it all comes down to how Bruce can strengthen the group over the summer given the financial realities at Hillsbrough.

Speaking recently to the Star, former gaffer Brian Laws stated that given how we ended the campaign, Bruce would naturally be optimistic that we could enjoy a good full year under his charge and our target would definitely be the Play-Off spots.

“Let’s be optimistic. I think Steve will be optimistic if he is allowed to bring in the players that he can get. He is good at wheeling and dealing, he has got enough contacts in the game and he has gone onwards of nearly 1,000 games as a manager. He has good contacts and I think he will do some good business, for sure. Whether it be swaps, loans or permanent signings, one thing is for sure, next season he will be wanting to hit the play-offs.”

We’ll know how realistic that aim will be once the season kicks off and we see what moves we make in the market, but with Bruce seemingly getting more out of key players anyway, there’s definitely room for some optimism.
