Caolan Lavery returned to Owls ahead of their ill-fated trip to Wolverhampton. But the young Northern Irish international was back amongst the goals for the Owls. Scoring a wonderful diving header on Saturday at Rotherham’s New York stadium and now the motivated striker is keen to finish the season on a high.

Wednesday were trailing 1-0 in the late stages of the South Yorkshire derby until, Lavery darted into the box to expertly head past ex-Owls loanee Damian Martinez, setting up the grandstand finish.

The forward now wants to force his way into Stuart Gray`s first team plans.

“It`s been a busy time, I only just signed my contract extension but I was needed back here. I really enjoyed my time at Chesterfield, they are a fantastic club and I wish them all the best but I`m a Sheffield Wednesday player. I missed the first half of the season but I feel I`m getting closer and closer. I want to force my way into the team and continue to score because that`s my job. For the goal, I was on the left wing and saw Lewis beat his man. It looked easy on the replay but I had to make up a lot of ground to get there and go past the defenders. The cross was right where you want it. We know Lewis is a great player who delivers with so much quality, so for the strikers, it`s a case of anticipating where the ball will land and that`s what happened. After that, it was complete madness! It was an amazing buzz to celebrate like we did with the fans. They were going crazy and we were just as happy.’

Lavery went onto to praise his team mates for the spirit shown to hit back at the last when all seemed lost for the Owls against smaller opposition.

‘As soon as we equalised, I thought we could go on and win but then to concede straight away was a blow. But the lads were brilliant to get back and win the game and it`s one we won`t forget.”
