Last time the Owls met Boxing Day 2016 opponents was in last seasons Capital One Cup. That fixtures was also at St James Park and a large and loud Owls following of circa 5,000 witnessed a famous ‘reserve team win`, more below:

Wednesday heaped yet more misery onto Newcastle United, following a solitary Lewis McGugan strike that dumped the Premier League side out of the Capital One Cup.

Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal fielded a side featuring 10 changes to the one which started Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham. However, dubbed as Wednesday reserves online (possibility to make the Toon Army feel worse) they went on to secure a famous 1-0 victory at St James’ Park over the Magpies.

Steve McClaren’s beleaguered men didn’t manage a single shot that tested Wildsmith in the whole 90 minutes. Leaving the once mighty Newcastle United with just one win in eight games during the 2015/16 season, that was in the previous Capital One Cup round over lowly Northampton Town.
