Owls boss Paul Sturrock has revealed he hopes to have signed a new number one on loan at the end of today – in time for the Owls opening game against Preston North End on Saturday.

Sturrock refused to reveal the identity of the Premiership stopper – but rumours circulating S6 seem to point towards Middlesbrough’s Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones. The Owls boss also confirmed the stopper isn’t Liverpool’s Scott Carson.

He told the official SWFC website: ‘We’re in negotiations with the goalkeeper and we’re very close. I’ve still got fingers crossed because I never taken anything for granted in this game. There are a couple of wee things to iron out but I’d be very hopeful the goalkeeper will be here training on Friday morning.’

Wednesday have been without a number one since for Preston stopper David Lucas left the club at the end of last season. Numerous names have been mentioned with a move to Hillsborough including Celtic’s David Marshall and Fulham stopper Tony Warner.

But it now looks as though a deal has been struck to secure the services of a young Premiership ‘keeper for a six-month period – with Brad Jones the current favourite.

Vital Sheffield Wednesday will (hopefully) reveal the new Owls number one later on today!
