Injury-ravaged Wednesday striker Francis Jeffers returned to complete half an hour as the Owls’ reserves beat Port Vale 3-1 on Tuesday night.

The result aside, Owls boss Brian Laws and Wednesdayites alike will have been more concerned about injured duo Jeffers and Small who both returned from injury for the clash and both came through unscathed to bag vital game time in their return to fitness.

Small played 58 minutes of the match and scored the opening goal and was replaced by former Arsenal, Everton and Blackburn Rovers man Jeffers, who in turn completed a fine return by putting in an impressive display.

Leon Clarke and Kenny Lunt bagged the other goal as Wednesday ran out comfortable winners at Hillsborough ahead of their clash with Watford on Saturday.

The visit of the Hornets will no doubt be a little too soon for both Small and Jeffers to return, but they’ll no doubt be looking towards the following week’s clash with Ipswich Town as a chance to return to first team matters.

Ross Davidson managed a late consolation strike for Vale but it was too little too late for the visitors, who came up against a youthful looking Wednesday reserve side which also included out-of-favour midfielder Kenny Lunt.
