“It’s Always The Same” – Bruce On Derby Day Stalemate

|

Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce arguably faced his toughest test earlier this evening as we welcomed locals Sheffield United to Hillsborough.

With Bruce being unbeaten since he officially walked through the door at the beginning of February, Owls fans have certainly had more to shout about given our performances and results and the improvement we’ve seen from the players under his charge.

With back to back wins going into tonight’s action, although we find ourselves down in 14th place in the Championship table, we are only seven points from the Play-Offs, so confidence has certainly been boosted.

It was, however, a third successive stalemate as both sides battled to a scoreless draw and each side only actually registered one shot on target. I presume Bruce will be happier to extend our unbeaten run than Wilder will be but both sides basically cancelled each other out.

Speaking to the BBC following the fulltime whistle in the Steel City derby, the gaffer explained.

“Both teams didn’t want to lose and it’s always the same in a derby game in my experience. That little bit of quality (Hutchinson) was the only bit we showed. Rolando got free and put a wonderful cross in. I think it was John Egan who left it alone, which confused Sam really. He’s disappointed because it was the best opportunity of the game. They were few and far between.”
