Alan Irvine will remain as manager of Wednesday after receiving the backing of chairman Milan Mandaric today.

Wednesdayites have been calling for the sacking of Irvine following a 4-0 defeat at lowly Leyton Orient on Saturday which saw the Owls slump to 12th in npower League One.

It was Wednesday’s fourth away league defeat on the spin and casts doubt over their prospects of promotion back to the Championship this season.

But, following a hoax e-mail last night which claimed Irvine had been sacked as Owls boss, the Owls chairman has backed Irvine.

‘This is a difficult time for results but at the same time we all have to not panic,’ he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

‘We have a crucial game tomorrow night so we’ve got to get behind the players and the manager and give him a chance.’

Mandaric famously backed Paulo Sousa just days before his sacking as Leicester City boss early this season.

And the pressure will be firmly on Irvine to get maximum points from tomorrow night’s clash with Yeovil Town at Hillsborough, and for the Owls to put in a performance to prove the team can turn their fortunes around this season.
