Wednesday boss Alan Irvine was all smiles following the Owls’ 5-0 rout of Hartlepool United yesterday, hailing his side’s performance as ‘fantastic’.

Wednesday put together their most comprehensive performance of the season to date at Victoria Park and moved to the top of the League One table.

‘It was a thoroughly professional performance and I’m absolutely delighted. Hartlepool is a tough place to come to, I watched them against Sheffield United and they looked a very good side,’ Irvine told the official SWFC website.

‘Wigan won there in midweek in the cup but I thought 3-0 was a very harsh result considering the quality of Hartlepool’s performance.

‘This result today was fantastic for us and we are certainly heading in the right direction, but there is always work to be done.’

Irvine will no be preparing his troops for the trip to Brentford next Sunday, which is being shown live on Sky.
