Wednesday boss Alan Irvine pulled no punches in his post-match press conference following the 5-0 defeat at Reading yesterday.

Irvine watched on as his side were demolished in emphatic style by the Royals in what was billed as a proverbial ‘six pointer’ going into the game at the Madjeski Stadium.

He described the performance as ‘awful’ and will no doubt be hard at work on the training pitch this week as the Owls prepare for a huge game at home against Leicester City at Hillsborough next weekend.

‘We were awful all over the pitch,’ he told the official SWFC website.

‘Even prior to the first goal, we were poor in possession and players didn’t take responsibility when they needed to. Our defending was poor, there was nothing that I could have said ‘we did that quite well’. Hopefully, this is just a one-off.’

The Owls boss also insisted his men need to have the ‘mental strength’ to come through their battle against relegation and show plenty of character if they’re to pull themselves away from danger.
