Following today’s clash between Carlisle United and Sheffield Wednesday, here are the instant reactions from both managers.

Carlisle United hosted Sheffield Wednesday at Brunton Park on Saturday January 6, with both sides playing out a scoreless draw on the day.

The hosts could thank the woodwork for saving them as Atdhe Nuhiu headed against the bar in the opening minute of the game, but the visitors blushes were saved when Sam Cosgrove had the ball in the back of the net but saw it ruled out for offside.

Teams:

Carlisle:

Bonham, Liddle, Hill, Parkes, Brown, Lambe (O’Sullivan 86), Jones, Devitt, Grainger, Cosgrove (Bennett 78), Hope (Miller 78).

Substitutes:

Nabi, Ellis, Miller, Bacon.

Sheff Wed:

Wildsmith, Palmer, Ferrao Venancio, Loovens, Fox, Jones, Wallace, Boyd (Rhodes 68), Reach, Nuhiu (Matias 79), Lucas Joao.

Substitutes:

Butterfield, Baker, Dawson, O’Grady, Pudil.

Speaking to the BBC’s cameras a short time after match day referee David Webb blew the final whistle, Carlisle United manager Keith Curle explained.

‘It was a good cup tie. The quality of Sheffield Wednesday was evident and we had a game plan to allow them to have dominance of the ball. They didn’t really cause us a lot of problems and we had chances on the break including a header that was ruled out for offside. They were the favourites, but Bonham made a Championship level save. He’s a young ‘keeper developing. Everything he needed to add to his game he is at Carlisle gaining it.’

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker gaffer Lee Bullen in his comparative interview explained.

‘We played some good stuff at times. Looking at some of the other FA Cup results the main thing is we are still in there. Our first half performance was good, but we never got a break in front of goal. We knew we would be up against a resolute defence. The second half was more open and we allowed Carlisle a bit more space and they gave it a go.’
