Injury blow for Sheffield Wednesday with midfielder ‘struggling to shake off injury’

|

According to Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday have suffered an injury blow ahead of Tuesday’s trip to face Wigan Athletic, with Massimo Luongo ‘struggling to shake off injury’.

The 27-year-old has been out of action with a groin problem that caused him to miss Wednesday’s Friday’s FA Cup win over Queens Park Rangers. His injury isn’t deemed as serious, but Luongo isn’t close to making a return for the Owls.

Garry Monk said in Monday’s pre-match press conference: “Massimo has a groin strain; it is not a serious one but I would say he is unlikely to play this week.” The Wednesday boss should be able to call upon Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy and Barry Bannan in Luongo’s absence.

The Australian international has made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. His last outing came in Wednesday’s 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18). After the Owls meeting with Wigan, they face Millwall on February 1 and Luongo should be fit to face them.

Monk has a lot of injuries to contend with of late. Liam Palmer (ankle) has been ruled out, Kieran Lee (doubtful) isn’t 100% ahead of the Wigan clash, Sam Hutchinson (foot) hasn’t returned, Steven Fletcher (knee) could be out until March and Fernando Forestieri (fitness) is playing for the u23s to build up his match fitness.
