Sheffield Wednesday could be without Fernando Forestieri against Leeds United on Saturday as the 29-year-old is still yet to return to training. Forestieri picked up a knee injury in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic (November 30) and has missed eight games for his troubles.

The Italian forward is working hard in the gym with medical staff, but he isn’t ready to train with the first-team. Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star believes Wednesday’s clash with Leeds will come too soon for Forestieri, but he could return in time to face Blackburn Rovers on January 18.

The 29-year-old has made 10 appearances in the Championship and EFL Cup this season, scoring and creating two goals. Forestieri has racked up only 312 minutes of football for Wednesday, however, starting just two games across the board due to stiff competition in attack.

Steven Fletcher, Jordan Rhodes, Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu are ahead of Forestieri in the pecking order under Garry Monk. His contract is up next summer too, so this may be his last season at Hillsborough.

With Forestieri spending the majority of the campaign on the treatment table, it’s hard to see him being retained past 2020.
